This article addresses the choice of destinations for the serious hiker. The Appalachian Trail being the most popular and longest trail in the United States allowing miles of hiking pleasure. Still not satisfied? Why not try the Mexican border where serious hikers and physically fit individuals can roam across the barren landscapes, vanquish all cattle and flora alike for the purposes of research? Or perhaps try going further north to the Canadian border? Here we will look at three different areas that are either situated at the Mexican border or a short drive away.
One of the best hiking areas in the world is the John Muir Trail. This trail is thousand of miles long and can be traverse in either direction. Walking in the opposite direction will bring you to the South Pole. The trail first winds through the southern Rockies of the United States and then continues through the Canadian Beaufort Chasm. The trail is truly a unique experience and takes you to a land of immense diversity and scenery. The John Muir Trail is a great place for individuals, couples and families to go when visiting North America.
Another great hiking area is Mount Desert Island, which is located just across the Atlantic Ocean from Maine. You can find Mount Desert Island in the middle of Maine some fifty miles from the city of Bangor. The island is divided into three main sections. Mount Desert Island is the main section which houses the towns and businesses. The remaining areas are Conway Bay, Katahdin and the beautiful beach.
Conway Bay is another very popular place for those who want to hike in Maine. This area is very flat and offers little hills and climbs. The beach offers the perfect opportunity for individuals to unwind and is a great place for families to visit and swim. The business of Conway Bay prides itself on providing a great shopping opportunity for the visitors. Conway Bay offers both camping services and hotels for the accommodation of those who need it.
Walking Mount Desert Island is yet another place in Maine that can be visited. This hiking park has been around since 1819. Although it has been around for nearly a century, it is still very much a work-in- progress. There are many trail maps available that will aid you in your trip. The Mount Desert Island National Park allows non-motorized travel on its trails. You can still have a horseback ride, although you won’t have much fun.
Whether you want to sit behind a big wooden desk and journal the next day or want to fly down the river by helicopter, Mount Desert Island has many activities for you to take part in. Grab your camping gear and dive into one of these exciting activities that will not disappoint.
Eagles Peak – 11,400 feet Dec. 7th
Once you reach the top of Eagles Peak you will find a great view of the southern sky. Around the summit are several circular trails that lead to the top of the mountain. Around the top of the mountain there is a service counter, a restaurant and fire station. You can call for a firsthand account of the climbing at Collectane.
Conway Brook – 13,400 feet July 25th
connect with Collectane Falls and you will find yourself in a wonderful panorama of mountains. The trail system at Eagles Peak links the Conasauga River to the main trail and offers a nice reward for your day of climbing. The river flows down the mountain and makes certain that you have the best possible chance of seeing wildlife as they congregate below your feet.
Players Cape – 16,550 feet April 30th
This is a game of inches and you are the only player! As you walk along the game trail you will be required to decide how many inches of water you will need to carry. There are small cascades and slow gentle slopes. Have a nice aim with your cane or walking stick when you reach the river. You might see geese and ducks splashing in the water.
